CERVICAL SMEAR appointments

Smears are booked with our Well Woman-trained nurses, please telephone to make an appointment.  We are delighted to be able to offer these in some of our Improving Access clinics (between 6:30pm and 8pm and on some Saturdaysl.

The practice works hard to match the provision of GP and nurse appointments with demand, managing the split between 'on the day/urgent' appointments, 'a few days ahead' appointments and pre-bookable appointments available up to four weeks ahead.  There are times when pressure on the system means that patients are asked to call back the following day when additional book on the day and forward booking capacity will be released: this is an on-going challenge: we continue to look at how we can manage this and, where possible within the resources we have available, increase capacity.


One opportunity to increase the number of appointments available is by reducing the number of appointments that are wasted because patients fail to attend.  DNAs are doubly frustrating because not only is the time is truly lost but, in most cases, the patient who has not attended will also wish to book another.  We recognise that everyone makes mistakes: we get tied up elsewhere, family or work commitments overrun or the person who has an appointment booked is sadly rushed into hospital.  We know that we will never have a 0% DNA rate - but we urge all patients to please cancel any appointment that they know they will fail to attend - even 10 minutes notice means that the GP can make a telephone call, or even fit in another patient.
